-> Yes, Creighton did lose a game to UConn over the weekend in the Big East standings, now sitting at 10-2 in the conference after taking two of three at Xavier while the Huskies (11-1) swept Butler in Indianapolis. That doesn’t take away from the series that is set to occur in Storrs next weekend as the two teams will square off for Big East bragging rights.

The Bluejays are now 25-12 after an 0-4 start with non-conference series wins over Loyola Marymount, Minnesota and Wichita State. On Friday against Xavier a Kyle Hess three-run home run in the eighth inning gave Creighton the lead and proved to be the game winner. On Saturday they scored 10 runs over the final three innings, headlined by Jack Grace’s seventh-inning grand slam, to squeak by with an 11-9 win.

The team’s top three hitters – Andrew Meggs, Alan Roden and Jared Wegner – are providing plenty of offense at the top of the order, and as shown over the weekend, there are plenty of other productive hitters for opposing teams to contend with. The pitching staff has been solid overall (3.88 cumulative ERA) despite not having their best weekend. The projected matchup between Creighton ace Dylan Tebrake (6-1, 2.76 ERA) and UConn’s Austin Peterson (8-0, 2.95) will undoubtedly be one of next weekend’s best. <-

-> The No. 15 UConn baseball team (37-8, 11-1 BIG EAST) face Creighton (25-12, 10-2 BIG EAST) in a three-game series at Elliot Ballpark beginning on Friday, May 6 at 3:05 p.m. All three games can be viewed on FloSports with Saturday's game also on CW20 in Connecticut.

Weather has been a factor already this weekend with the series opener being moved up to 3:05 p.m. There is a possibility that Saturday's contest will get push back a couple hours from the 1:05 p.m. start. That will be determined after Friday's series opener. <-

Creighton is 0-2 against teams currently in the RPI top 50, and is 2-6 against teams currently rated 51-100 in the RPI. Whatever the case, it should prove to be an interesting series this weekend, as it will go a long way in determining the regular season Big East champion.

-> FIVE MORE PLACES TO BE…

The best of the rest. If you can’t make it to one of the above five, these’ll fill the bill just fine too.

– Creighton (25-12, 10-2) at No. 15 Connecticut (37-8, 11-1)

The top two teams in the Big East are having a showdown in Storrs this weekend. The Bluejays need this way more since their RPI is at No. 98. UConn can drop this series and still have a good enough RPI to stay in at-large consideration. Man, but can you imagine if the Huskies still had first-round draftee-to-be Reggie Crawford on the mound? Yikes.<-

After a good series last weekend, I'm shocked that Ferrer is back out of the lineup. Is this injury related -- either being reinjured or not wanting to play him on a cold, wet, day -- or purely baseball related?

Probably a righty going for Creighton. Getting lefty bat in there.

Don't know for sure, but it is possible that the Creighton pitcher is much more effective against righty hitters than left handed hitters, which would also help to explain Garbowski being in the lineup today. I suspect that if Ferrer is healthy he will be getting time in the lineup in future games as well. It will also be interesting to see if Garbowski is healthy enough to take up his role again as the catcher for the games that Gallagher pitches. It's a very small sample size, but Garbowski is hitting .500 since he returned to the lineup in the Yale lineup.

One of those things, but I suspect the coaching staff would like to get both Ferrer and Garbowski playing time in the remaining regular season games. And in the same vain, things could get even more interesting in terms of playing time if and when Kevin Morton is fully healed from his hamstring injury.

We need to make this pitcher for Creighton work a little harder. 2 pitches for 2 outs in 2nd, then Donlan swings at ball 4.
