Top 5th, after a 2 out Padilla infield error, a couple of Xavier hits bring in 3 unearned runs, 11-5. An rbi triple makes the score 11-6, Simmons hits the wall on the play and could be hurt. Looks like he will stay in the game. Kirby coming out, Ian Cooke in to pitch. Cooke strikes out the first batter he faces to end the inning.

Xavier spent every pitcher they have on stealing Friday's game.

Seems that Xavier doesn't have much quality pitching to begin with. They don't have much in the way of starting pitching, they seem to use openers quite a bit. In my mind it is hard to develop pitchers when you play your home games in an extreme hitters ballpark, which is the case for Xavier.

I tuned in a touch late to the senior day ceremonies. Here are the players who were honored and awarded framed jerseys prior to the game:

Kenny Campbell
Devin Kirby
Cole Chudoba
T.C. Simmons
Enzo Stefanoni
Casey Dana
Matt Donlan
Justin Willis
Kevin Ferrer
Austin Peterson

The following players were honored last season, but returned for another season:

Christian Fedko
Jimmy Wang
Zach Bushling
Erik Stock

Not quite sure if Ben Huber was honored.

Chris Jones says that most of the 10 players honored today have eligibility left. We'll see who comes back for another year. I believe Chris said that Campbell, Chudoba, and Dana have used up all their eligibility.

He mentioned Donlan was well.

Thanks! My attention had wondered just before Chris Jones started talking about this stuff, so I'm not surprised if I missed a player.

Best crowd here at the Doug since I have been coming. Xavier and Creighton will battle each other in 2 weeks. Good 2 vs 3 matchup. I like Xavier's hitting better but Creighton has the ace.

Bottom 8th, a no out rbi double for Simmons after Padilla had a leadoff walk. 16-6 UConn. A 2 out rbi single for Casey Dana, 17-6 UConn.

Top 9th, Justin Willis in to pitch. Willis hasn't pitched in a game in over a week.

Really surprised to see no pinch hitters there in the bottom of the 8th with a 9 run lead. Avoid injuries and give a guy like Fedko one last at bat at home. Maybe for celebration purposes?

Taking no chances against a team with Xavier's offense.

Top 9th, Willis with a 1-2-3 inning, UConn with the 17-6 victory, they take another weekend series and they are the regular season Big East champs, as they own the tie breaker over Creighton.

Sorry, but that doesn't work here, Xavier had already cleared their bench.

I did think of that after I put up my post. Still, I have to suspect that is how Penders was thinking. It also helps explain why Penders did not use any of the lesser used relief pitchers the last couple games when UConn had big leads over Xavier late in the games. You know I always like to see guys like Wang, Quinn or others get a chance to pitch when there are big leads late in games.
