OT: The Original Song: It's The Best

I was thinking, Walking in the Rain isn’t that old. But I was thinking of this one, famously covered by Grace Jones:

    Nika in Seattle

Sue and the Storm know which side their bread is buttered on. Nika may not have All Star written all over her (I’m not saying it will never happen), but she will be a fan favorite.

OT: The Original Song: It's The Best

Billy Idol had a hit with the Doors LA Woman. It was pretty good, but the original is just tremendous with Ray on the Fender Rhodes and tack piano and Robby with his screaming guitar.

OT: The Original Song: It's The Best

White Cliffs of Dover reminded me of this song from Jimmy Cliffs, which quotes a line from that song: Wandering I am lost and I can’t seem to find the White Cliffs of Dover Many Rivers to Cross has been covered many, many times, by everyone from UB40 to Lenny Kravitz.

Jose Feliciano had a wonderful hit of Light My Fire a year later, but I’ve always preferred the Doors version.

    Ice Brady's Freshman Year

Well said. When I saw footage of Ice in high school, I thought the sky was the limit. Nothing in my mind changed this past year. She already shoots out to a few feet with both hands, over either shoulder. Another year with CD and Jamelle, improve the footwork and toughness in traffic, I...

Nika and KK both attending Kelsey Plum camp

Plum really seems to be a dog lover! I'm a cat person, but realize how wonderful all animals are, and how having a couple of dogs/puppies around can be such a boost for folks at a demanding event like this.

Nika and KK both attending Kelsey Plum camp

Looks like that camp will be really good for Nika.

    Reminisce.. Some Early Nika

This is the sort of stuff that made me so excited when UConn signed Nika. She did not disappoint.

OT: You Like the Cover More Than the Original Song

I’m a man was originally done by The Spencer Davis Group with Steve Winwood on vocals. I love Chicago’s version with Terry, Peter, and Robert each taking verses. Great guitar, bass, and percussion, too.

UConn stats... 10 reasons Ashlynn may start...(again)

    11) She plays most of the time with a smile on her face. :) I'd be shocked if she doesn't start at the beginning of the year, mildly surprised if she doesn't start all year. As Geno has been known to say, what we saw this past season is the worst she'll play. She's a sponge.

I got Innervisions when it came out, and this song still amazes me. Here’s Chris Daughtry doing a metal version on Idol:

    Swimming

I know what you mean. At work there are several people who walk, run, or work out at lunchtime but perish the thought of ever taking ONE flight of stairs to their offices.

    Swimming

Any form of indoor exercise. I can tolerate the rowing machine, but nothing else. Swimming in a pool, treadmill, lifting weights, stationary bike. . . For me the point of exercise is mental health and other pleasures, and I don’t get that from looking at four walls or other exercise machines...

    Paige video

I was looking on youtube to see if it's a cover (sounds like the original to me, including the electric sitar), and I found that it was used in Guardians of the Galaxy, so mystery likely solved.

    Paige video

Anyone else impressed that Paige even knows this song? It’s gotta be 50 years old, and I don’t remember even hearing it on oldies stations.

    60/50/90

Sue had a rounded 50-50-90 season: 0.502/0.497/0.898 in 99-00, rounds to 0.50/0.50/0.90. Unfortunately, rounded doesn't count, it has to be full percentages.

    WNBA and roster spots

This. Many players show up as rookies (or with 5-10 WNBA games under their belts) at the age of 25 or even 30, after playing in Europe/Asia/Australia for several years. A couple of years ago I was like, "Crystal Bradford, I don't remember her." She was 28 years old, had graduated college 6...

OT: You Like the Cover More Than the Original Song

I’m glad Laura Nyro got the exposure (and made the money) from folks recording her songs. But I almost always preferred her original versions. One exception is And When I Die, recorded by BS&T.

Dave Mason wrote this and recorded the original version with Traffic, a non-album single. Joe Cocker's version is way better.

I saw Jorma solo a couple of times. If you closed your eyes while he was playing this, it just seemed like there were guitars coming at you from every direction.

OT: You Like the Cover More Than the Original Song

Led Zeppelin did a lot of that. It's certainly possible that they thought something like When the Levee Breaks was a folk song, but after they got caught a couple of times, they really needed someone to check their music before copyrighting it. LZ is not alone in that, of course, but they made...

OT: You Like the Cover More Than the Original Song

I was gonna stay away from Dylan covers, but the floodgates have opened. Hendrix's version of All Along the Watch Tower has already appeared; he also did Like a Rolling Stone at Monterey. As great as Dylan's version is, Jimi's just blows me away. The guitar work underneath both the talking...

Should Clark be on the Olympic team?

I think Clark (and Bueckers, maybe Brink) should be invited to camp. They might not be ready this year, but the USOC/USABB/whoever does the planning should be preparing the next generation.

    Sad Sign of the Times

I’ve spent a lot of time on the University of Maryland campus, in fits and starts over the years. I hadn’t been on campus for a year or two after they left the ACC, and when I was next there, it was quite jarring to see B1G signs EVERYWHERE. I feel their pain.

Sticking with blues classics, this is the Doors doing Bo Diddley. Not only is it a brilliant rendition, it shows that the Doors were so much more than Jim, and they were a fantastic band even when thet weren’t relying on their songwriting.

This is my favorite version of Hoochie Coochie man. Written by Willie Dixon, made famous by Muddy Waters, very ably rendered by Steppenwolf.
