    Drummond big night

I mean, not to defend Melo too much, but he has olympic rings and led the Nuggets to the Western Conference Finals (only to lose to Kobe), and led a 50+ win Knicks team. Add in his college success and he's in a very different league than Drummond—and when he was 27 he was even more obviously a...

Indeed if he retired or died today he wouldn't make it in. But we're projecting.

    Drummond big night

He's 27. He's just entering his prime. Provided he avoids injury he's going to a bunch of years closer to 1-3 rather than 7-8.

Trey Patterson announcement live in 2minutes

Imagine thinking saying multiple people would commit to the UConn program—without naming who or giving any dates—at exactly the time of year that kids commit constitutes some sort of amazing prediction. It's like saying January 1st that there will be snow in 2021, but not giving days or...

Can’t believe anyone ever doubted whether we hired the right guy

Same here. Freshman in college. Utterly brutal. There have been games that the loss has stung me longer for a variety of reasons (George Mason, Maryland, Mississippi State, NC State), but the shock of this visceral response to this one was, in retrospect, pretty embarrassing. I'm still not...

2022 Recruiting: Corey Floyd Jr To UConn

It's nice to have someone correct, specific, and first on these things regularly rather than waiting to see where the wind blows. Good call a while back, Matrim. Glad to have Floyd in the wings.

Who Will Be the 12th Big East Team?

It would be colossally dumb to add a team. If they were, St. Louis is really the only one that makes sense. It gives a clear and easy East/West split, major market, etc. Won't happen because they'd be dumb, but that's the least stupid of all the stupid answers

    Lunardi has us as a 7th seed vs . . .

I don't think you're reading it right. 7774 is saying the same thing I am: 5s beat 12s at a higher rate than 6s beat 11s. It's just that 5s losing to 12s feel more like upsets for a variety of reasons. So the person clamoring for a 6-7 seed is really just falling for the hype.

The Playoff must expand to eight teams or the same four will always be playing

10-16 out of well over a hundred certainly preserves the integrity of the sport. All conference champions plus 2-6 non-champion wildcards feels like the perfect compromise. Regular season matters, conference champions automatically get in, and ultimately there will be a diversity of teams in...

    Lunardi has us as a 7th seed vs . . .

The 5s that lose are usually mediocre major conference teams paired up against high performing mid-majors or talented underperforming majors. Also, historically, 5s beat 12s at a higher rate than 6s beat 11s and 7s beat 10s. They also have a solid chance of getting a 13 rather than a 4. And...

The Playoff must expand to eight teams or the same four will always be playing

Honestly, college football doesn't play enough non-conference games to really get a true sense of who the best teams are. In years with undefeated teams, you have a reasonable guess, but there's no reason CFB needs to be the only sport where every team coming into the season cannot reasonably...

    Lunardi has us as a 7th seed vs . . .

You can get lucky enough as a 7 seed, particularly if you are badly underseeded—as UConn was in 2014, though they also had a number of breaks—but get me to a 6 seed or higher and they we have a real chance at the second weekend. The fewer "tough" games we have the better. Their ceiling is...

    KenPom #21

Given the weirdness of the year and some of our key injuries (Polley, Akok, Jackson, Bouk), we're pretty lucky that this is a down year for the BE and it's a little easier to survive it. Last year every team was Top 100 KenPom. Georgetown, Butler, St. John's & DePaul are all worse than they were...

Why don't we schedule a game for Thursday or Friday?

The time to fill in games was earlier in the year. Now the schedule is packed and Bouk is hurt. It was—IMO—a mistake to not try to pack in some early cupcakes. But it is what it is and I'm perfectly okay with taking it easy.

Top 25, would be top 10

It's a major advantage to Hurley not running off members of the team that we have actual seniors who buy in and have played with each other for over 3 years now and that there's real buy-in and chemistry in general.

Top 25, would be top 10

We went two straight decades with really never sneaking up on anyone. Those were the best 20 years of UConn basketball and I for one would trade sneaking up on people for that.

Top 25, would be top 10

I'd prefer we have another Quad 1 win. It's going to be a weird and fluky year, and a Q1 win like that can be worth multiple seed-lines.

    OT: CFP Thoughts

The regular season is already meaningless because unless you're one of a few teams you aren't making the playoffs even if you go undefeated and if you play in the ACC/B10/SEC winning a conference title is just optional for making the CFP. Better to make a conference title mean something and...

    OT: CFP Thoughts

Every conference champion plus two teams selected by a committee, all seeded by a committee. Until Final Four. First two rounds on campus of higher seeded team. You could add four more at-larges for more cash and more good teams. Still (theoretically) easy games in the first two rounds for...

MLB to add Negro Leagues to the official record books

Satchel Paige made MLB All Star Games in his mid-40s. What would he have done in his prime?

MLB to add Negro Leagues to the official record books

In the late 1960s, a group decided which non MLB leagues counted as "Major Leagues," and the Negro Leagues were excluded, on the basis of race. They should have been included then. If they didn't do this for players like Cap Anson and others, perhaps there'd be an argument. They did, so there...

    OT: 40 years ago today

There's very little enduring literature out there that is purely happy. Perhaps it's because Tolstoy (as usual) was correct: All happy families are the same, each unhappy family is unhappy in their own way. And we as people like a little bit of difference and adventure in our art. Paul somehow...

Kentucky off to a rough start

You can make that argument. I think it would be wrong, though. In addition @Hey Adrien! 's note, I also think your comparison to Wooden is off. Wooden got players for 3 years. Wooden also was essentially gifted the Final Four every year given the way the tournament was set up. There was also no...

Kentucky off to a rough start

I mean, their decade with Calipari is pretty darn good. 1 Title 1 Runner-up 4 Final Fours 7 Elite 8s 8 S16s Only a few programs in the country would not want to trade with them. This year, right now, they suck. And we can enjoy that. But they'll be better by the end of the year, and if not...

I was really looking forward to watching Alterique play tonight until I realized its on ESPN+

To be fair, the AAC isn't the B1G. You've basically got a lot of easy wins in the AAC in a way the B1G doesn't offer Indiana. Even when Rutgers was the worst team in the conference, the RAC was a tough place to play. Nobody says that about Tulane, ECU, USF, ECF, etc. etc.

When you have Koch money and a decent conference (and for WSU it was a big upgrade), you'll be able to hire a high quality coach. Cincinnati, Memphis, Houston...these are just huge huge upgrades from what they were playing against.

    Vandy out of Legends Classic

They're going to do everything in their power to have the tournament. But there will be all sorts of cancellations along the way. So, given that, play everyone you can. Losses mean a little less since any time there is a cancellation you probably already have lost practice time. It's a weird...

    Vandy out of Legends Classic

The reality is you play for the NCAA tournament, if there is one, and the best way to get there is to get as many games under your belt as you can. Practice is good and all, but games are better, and given the fact that you can't be assured you can play against the teams that are actually on...
