#25 North Carolina State defeated Wake Forest 74-61 Sunday afternoon, before a sold out home crowd and a nationally-televised audience, improving to 21-6, 10-4 ACC. Wake Forest fell to 12-15, 4-10 ACC. With a Virginia loss an hour later to Miami, the Wolfpack Women have taken sole possession of 4th place in the ultra-competitive Atlantic Coast Conference standings.
Wake got off to a fairly strong start and led 18-17 after the first quarter, before the Wolfpack stepped it up on defense. NC State led 40-34 at the half, and the lead ballooned to 21 points at 70-49, early in the 4th quarter.
The star of this game was Wake Forest's Elisa Penna, who went 11-20 from the field, including 9 of 13 from THREE and racked up 34 of Wake's 61 points in this game. She was the only Demon Deacon to reach double figures.
NC State was led by Ace Konig, who scored 20 points against Wake Forest again, after scoring 20 against Wake at their place a few weeks ago. Konig was 7 of 12 from the field, including 6 of 11 from THREE. Akela Maize added 18 points, while Chelsea Nelson and Kiara Leslie also hit double figures for the Wolfpack Women, which shot 49% from the field.
Wake Forest shot 39% on 22 of 56 shooting, but was 11 of 22 from THREE.
Wake won the rebounding battle against the ACC's #2 team in rebounding margin, 34-30, but committed 20 turnovers.
NC State goes on the road for its final two conference contests. Thursday, they play at Pittsburgh before completing the regular season next Sunday at #5/#4 Notre Dame. The Wolfpack Women won the last meeting between the two teams, last season in Raleigh.
