Penders on Geno's radio show last night praised both Marzi & Tabakman, but said Cross is dealing with a shoulder issue.

Heard Cross may be a longer term issue... not sure how long though.

In the posted interview - Penders made it sound like Brown is eligible but raw compared to Davey and Darras.

Listened to interview. great job by Chris Jones, very informative. Some highlights listed below.

(1) Cross looks like he is out for year, put confident he will be ready for next year.
(2) Penders definitely not happy to lose his number 1 starter , but feels they have great depth at staring pitching this year.
(3) Marzi, Tabakman ( toss up as who is #1 starter)
(4) Coletti, Kay, Ward, Zapatta (sp?) vying for 3rd weekend starter.
(5) Cather McDowell a little ahead of Conner David at this point
(6) Infield looks like , Daniello (3rd),Verdi (ss), Sienna (2nd), Melley (1st)
(7) Looking to get Aaron Hill playing time at any infield position besides 1st. Called him ss of the future.
(8) Sundberg worked harder then anyone in off season. Looks to be starting in CF and batting 9th. Verdi leading off gives them 2 good base-runners back to back.
(9) Yavarone and Testani are current leaders to start in right and left. But said that both should not feel comfortable. Looking for more offense from both, especially Testani. Said both Davey and Darras (among others) will be given plenty of opportunity to win the right and left field job

I just listened to the interview, and that's the impression I got. Also sounds like in addition to the people mentioned for starting pitching jobs, Ruotolo and Radue are leading candidates to get important innings out of the pen.

It sounds like the infield is pretty well set. The same cannot be said for the outfield and by extension, the DH spots. Sundberg is the most likely starter in center, while the corner spots are more of a jumble.

With Davey, Darras, along with freshman Olmstead and Garabedean the long range future of the OF seems promising, to say the least.

The long range future of the outfield is indeed promising. But my comments are more geared for the immediate future, the beginning of the season. None of the returning outfielders had a good years at the bat, although it sounds like from the interview that Sundberg is much improved. Right now it sounds like the corner jobs are going to be manned by Yavarone and Testani, at least until someone produces enough at the bat to take their jobs away. The good news is there are a lot more promising options to go to this season then there were before if Sundberg, Testani, and Yavarone don't hit enough.

Strong work indeed from Chris Jones. There's lots of great tidbits to be gleaned from the interviews with the coaches. Overall, it's a great review of where each player stands on the team at this point. I'm really looking forward to the beginning of the season now.

From what Penders was saying, it could be some time before he settles onto something resembling a set lineup. While there is no position player who is as good as Mazzilli was, there is much more quality depth on this team then there has been in recent seasons.

Previously picked to finish 3rd in coaches Pre-Season Poll (behind Ville and UCF):

UConn Huskies
Head Coach: Jim Penders
2013 Record: 35-28
The Huskies will look to return to the NCAA tournament for the fourth time in the last five seasons. UConn returns two weekend starters in Anthony Marzi and Jordan Tabakman. Offensively Bobby Melley, Vinny Sienna, and Tom Verdi will compose three fourths of the returning infield, with the exception being departed Second Team All-American L.J. Mazzilli.

Came inside from my second round of shoveling increasingly rain heavy snow from the various pathways to the house to find tweets that Penders and company have landed in Florida. Let the season commence!

When will the starting lineup for opening game be announced? Just before game? Was hoping to see something official by now.
