Rutgers playing UConn for the Liberty/Big Apple Trophy in B1G lacrosse. Play it at Yankee Stadium or if that is used or to big, Icahn Stadium right in the East River. Syracuse would shat a whole bushel of oranges into its pants. I like it, a LOT.

Maybe to Maryland, but if you look at the trash talk that Hopkins fans do, a lot more of it is with Cuse fans. Maryland hasn't won a title in 40 years; calling them part of the greatest anything in lacrosse is absurd.

Talk to a Hopkins grad or player. The Maryland game is the only one that matters. This isn't debatable.

I would think that if UConn gets into either the ACC or the Big Ten, a men's lacrosse program would be a certainty.

Maryland - Hopkins is the lacrosse version of Ohio State - Michigan in football. The #1 rivalry regardless of record going into the game.

The fact that Maryland - Hopkins is now a conference rivalry, and will from now on be the last game of the regular season, only adds fuel to the fire. Maryland - Hopkins could meet three times at the end of the season every year going forward: last game of the regular season, B1G Conference Tournament, and NCAA Tournament.

From a legal standpoint, New York City (and thus State) owns all of the 'natural' islands in the Hudson River. As the Statue of Liberty was built on the original island, Bedlow Island, Lady Liberty is in New York and is a resident of the Borough of Manhattan. Ellis Island, on the other hand, is split as half is a natural island, which is owned by New York, and the other half is fill, which is owned by New Jersey. Each state raises this issue periodically and it ends-up in the US Supreme Court because apparently that judicial body has nothing else to do.

Overall, it doesn't really matter outside of each state's ego because neither island has an inhabitants (voters) and both are owned by the Federal Government (Park Service) and thus there are no private, tax paying commercial entities on either.

IIRC, Liberty Island is Federal land that ceded by NY to Federal Goverment. NJ own the rights to the 'fill' portions of Ellis Island (currently not in use) but not the areas that part of the National Park (open areas.) The Statue of Liberty is closer to Jersey City than to NYC, FWIW.

It's not unusual. Look at the state lines of MS, AR, TN, etc. along the Mississippi. The state lines have not moved; but, the Mississippi has. Thus pieces of each state are no longer connected by land and are on the opposite side of the river.

Maryland and Johns Hopkins lacrosse teams will meet in the regular-season finale every year, and, as of Tuesday morning, there will be a trophy on the line.

The two programs unveiled “The Rivalry Trophy” four days before they close out the inaugural Big Ten lacrosse season Saturday night at Byrd Stadium.

The trophy, according to the umterps.com release, is a nod to one of the state of Maryland’s most iconic images, the Maryland blue crab. It is made out of reclaimed wood from Baltimore, Maryland, and it comes in at 25 pounds, and is 32 inches wide and 22 inches tall.

“Our coaching staff and players consider it a great honor and privilege to compete in a rivalry that is much greater than ourselves,” said Maryland head coach John Tillman. “We are thrilled to add even more meaning to the Maryland-Johns Hopkins rivalry with the addition of the trophy.”

“It is not lost on our current staff and players or those who came before us that representing Johns Hopkins in the greatest rivalry in college lacrosse is an honor,” Johns Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala noted. “After more than 100 all-time meetings, it’s not easy to add something to a rivalry that is already so intense and important to so many, yet the addition of the “The Rivalry Trophy” does just that. We look forward to the addition of this new and exciting chapter in the storied history of Hopkins-Maryland.”

The trophy’s great and all, but the two teams are playing for a lot more Saturday. With a win, Maryland, which already owns at least a share of the Big Ten crown, can take the outright Big Ten title. Johns Hopkins, with a win, can earn a share of the crown, either with Maryland or Maryland and Ohio State, depending on the Buckeyes’ result at Rutgers.

Right, B1G is a 'Trophy League'. The crustacean will certainly be a nice addition. Well, then again, maybe not so much. Perhaps they should hit the beach again to see if something else has washed up on shore. Just a thought.
