It took her some time to realize just how good she really could be, but when that light came on, she became an absolute monster for UConn. Her and Maya together were an unbeatable pair of aces. Just tenacious, quick, strong, born to play basketball, and when she figured out what paying the price to be great was all about, she paid it and then some. Being the next Tina is not pressure I'd want to put on any future UConn big, but they can all emulate her fearlessness, desire, and love/joy for the game. Maya deserves all the accolades she got while at UConn, but it was a privelege to be able to watch Tina's college career up close as well.
Did you also notice how well Renee, Maya and Kalana were feeding it into the post? We don't presently have those kind of passers on this team. (not saying even if we did Stokes/Dolson would be on Tina's level). In Charles we are talking about one of the best posts in the world. If any of the posts can get to a level below her, they would be AA's.
I donh't think she would have ended up the superstar she is if I had not bitched so much about her rebounding her freshman year.
I think the 2010 weapons we're more of a threat than this year's team so they sag until UConn prove they can hit shots. Renee and Maya were also great midrange shooter... this team doesnt have a true midrange shooter (Bria is close)
Tina was the number one ranked high school player. I think her team beat Maya's team. I would hardly call her a project. I guess that makes Griner a project also.
It took Geno the better part of three years to get her to play near her potential. Not sure what that has to do with Griner though.
I would never have considered her a project. Tina was always really good. The problem was that she and Geno knew she could be great. This is where I think Geno and the coaching staff deserve some credit-pushing her to that next level.
well said... some have no clue what they are talking about and just bitch & moan about certain players. BTW Tina was a HUGE part of 2 titles... and it takes post longer to "develope"
