My first OT topic, in the spirit of Nan's off-season post.

Who were some of your favorite TV or Radio sports announcers?
I was always partial to Lindsey Nelson's coverage of college football. Consistently excellent, knowledgeable and objective with a good voice and he just irradiated the excitement.

Cawood Ledford he was the play-by-play announcer for University of Kentucky basketball for 39 years. One of the great announcers in college basketball.

Doc Emerick for hockey-I'm continually amazed how he can follow the action and keep up with who has the puck, etc
Phil Rizzuto for baseball. Probably because I grew up idolizing "The Mick"...

For blatant homeriam could anybody top Tommy Heinsohn for the Celtics?
Tim McCarver in his first couple of years was great and pretty revolutionary on color.

Curt Gowdy - all sports
Mike Emrick - the voice of hockey
Ken Venturi - golf
Bud Collins and John McEnroe - tennis
Chris Schenkel - the ABC Wide World of Sports great and one of the few people that could make bowling watchable
Jackie Stewart - Formula One...

Johnny Most. We were the last family on the block to have a TV, so I got used to radio, and in hoop season that meant Johnny. Sure he was an outright homer, but you could close your eyes while he called a game, and see it play out in your head.

Ned Martin.

Sean McDonough, Jay Bilas and Bill Raftery were the best for college basketball.
Gary Cohen, Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez on SNY are wonderful on Mets games. The Mets stink but the games are worth watching just to listen, learn and laugh with those three.

Jim McKay. Wide World of Sports. The Olympics. World Cup Skiing. And sadly, Munich 1972. He was a broadcast giant in my estimation.
The McKays lived in Westport, CT for many years and I had the good fortune of bumping into them on several occasions. He and his wife were the epitome of class.

From my earlier days, I'll second Sonny's vote for Lindsay Nelson on college football.

For the present era, I've always liked Al Michaels. He always gives you a good call,
be it football, baseball, or Olympic hockey.
