Allow me. I have driven on it, much to my chagrin. The 405 has 5 lanes and an HOV lane in each direction.( Orange County recently voted to expand the HOV lane). It is the busiest highway in the country. Going South, It splits off from the 5 North of LA, goes through West LA and then runs back into the 5 South of LA but before San Diego. Think of a congested 95 just North of New York City, only twice as wide, and you start to get the picture.

Yes it is bad. Its always busy..but just decide to stay off of it during the morning and afternoon rush hours. Then it probably will just stop.

I live in OC, not too far from where the 405 ends on the southern part.
As others have described it is bad. Worst part, IMO is between the 101 and I-10(not too far from UCLA).
If you need to drive on it, having a second person in the car is often a big help, as the car pool lanes are 24/7, not just rush hour.
If you are going to be out here use sig alert at http://www.sigalert.com/Map.asp?region=Greater+Los+Angeles#lat=33.98417&lon=-118.22335&z=2
It will let you know where the slow traffic is. There is also an app for sig alert.

Think 10-12 lane very slowly moving parking lot. Whatever you do, don't let the unbroken line of school buses keep you from exiting when you need to.

It has been over 30 years since I lived in LA, so cannot provide a current assessment. There are few major cities these days without major traffic headaches.

Been on it many times and will be in the vicinity in a few weeks. My son lives a half mile away and very close to UCLA. Rush hours are bad. Other times of day are hit or miss. I've had times of pretty free flowing traffic, but it is not predictable. If you qualify for the HOV lane, they are much better than Connecticut's because there are frequent areas where you can get in and out of them.
