Used to play Twin Hills as a 9-holer in a work league. Got a job and more in the other direction, and never have seen the full 18 that was on the drawing board back then. Maybe that glowing recommendation ("not awful, not great a fun little course with a couple funky holes but I liked it") will get me back!

Twin Hills is pretty good and there aren't a ton of options, Skunk might be the worst course in the state.

Twin Hills and the Skunk were our 2 go to courses while at UConn.

I hate Great River. It's overrated and the price tag is salt in the wounds. There is no level of class that justifies the price tag.

I play in a tournament every fall at Skunk. What a disaster that place is - a couple of years ago our cart caught fire.

I haven't played there since college (a long time ago). It was fine for what we needed back then as poor college kids. Keep in mind we drank like kings with a case of Natty Light for $6.99.

I agree it is pricy
I will be in Ct in a couple of weeks and I usually take my two grandsons golfing
Probably the only rounds they play all year. So we probable won't play there. Even though I would love to.
I could play some of the best courses in the Phoenix area in season for that amount
Right now prices here are low even though the high will be in the 80's.
I will play with seven year old AZHuskiePup on Friday ( schools over for the year)
I can play for $40 bucks he plays for free. May is a great time to visit AZ if your a golfer.
The snowbirds are gone it's not to hot and prices are decent.
If that's the course I'm thinking it has a real interesting past.
One of my early bosses was a member there back in the 60's and 70's
I believe it was private. The owner tried to make money by developing houses on part of the course . The members were up in arms. I believe they even sued. The housing crash of the early 80's stopped the development cold and the owner went bankrupt.
I believe the course was shut down for quite a while.even though there were 9 playable holes. Every time I drove up Rte 110,I though what a waste, the setting was beautiful and the fact no golf was being played was a testament to greed. Looking at the prices apparently greed still haunts that course.

You're thinking of the old Mill Stone Country Club, which was bulldozed to make way for Great River. GR has only been open for less than 15 years but sits on the site of the former Mill Stone track. In its last years of operation the course deteriorated past the point of being salvaged. I used to play there in high school.

Yes I couldn't remember the name. I would suspect some houses were also bulldozed to get a 7000 yard layout.
The first course I ever took my grandsons to was the Orchard in Milford . My youngest grandson parred the second hole he ever played. I still have the scorecard. He was 7 and small for his age. He dropped a 20 foot putt after I made him choke up on the putter to square it to the green.
Golfing and Lunch have been our tradition even though the're both over 21 ,in fact Lunch got more expensive than greens fees at times as they became teenagers.
Any suggestions for a fairly easy, not to pricy course ,in a 30 mile radius of Southbury.

Not familiar with many courses up that way but if you're looking for a playable course that's not too long and lets you spray it a bit at a reasonable price I'd recommend Timberlin in Berlin. It's right about 30 miles or so from Southbury. Restaurant on site as well.

Complaining about the price is justified but as far as the quality of the course goes, deteriorated past the point of being salvaged is inaccurate. I play there every week and that's not what my group thinks about it. I play with a former club pro and a single digit golfers and they love playing there. I can assure you that they would not pay the high greens fees if the course were deteriorated past the point of being salvaged.

I was talking about the old Mill Stone course that doesn't exist anymore.

Oxford Greens in Oxford and Richter Park in Danbury come to mind.
There is also Oak Lane, and Woodbridge CC both former private courses.
Also Orange CC and Grassy Hill in Milford. Orange and Grassy Hill are probably the easiest.

Not quite Connecticut, but I've played a few RI courses near the border the last few years where I meet up with a Boston area friend. Yesterday we played at Fenner Hill in New Hope, RI for the first time with some friends who had played there once before. That is a tough place to play for the first time, and it's even harder when your driving sucked all day as mine did. A very high number of blind shots and some forced carries. At least the first time there, you have to spend a bit of time driving or walking ahead to see where you need to aim. The greens are as tough as any. There are very few dead straight putts even from within 6 feet and many extreme breaks. Putting from above the hole is death there, although putting was the one bright spot for me as was the very good grilled chicken sandwich.

The other couple of courses that we play are on the Kingston Rd. off I95 exit 3. Meadowbrook and Beaver River. We've played the latter a bit more lately, partly because it's less expensive, but also a fun layout with a few interesting elevation changes and hidden trouble. At the moment, all of these tracks are in great shape.

Playing The Ranch today which has been in great shape, playing fast as a result of the limited rain.

Wintonbury has had a rough start to the year as the aeration still had not grown in as of last weekend. Greens are rolling decent and quick, but with a little too dressing and some fertilizing I would expect them to come in quick...not sure what they're waiting for though.

Played the Ranch 2 weeks ago and it was in super shape. Just as you say fast in the fairways (which is good for a 55 year old playing with 40 year olds lol) but everything is immaculate.

Play there 4-5 times a year mainly in the fall or spring but also a 36er in the summer with the boys. Interesting track but always in nice condition and one of those "fun" courses. Some real good golf holes and some tests. I like Fenner and Beaver as well as Richmond and Exeter all in the same vicinity. Meadowbrook is wonderful and a level above of those at least. Throw in Winnapaug in the fall/winter and there's plenty of fun golf in that corner of RI

Has anyone played the Mohegan Sun Country Club? Is it worth the trip to travel and play?

The old Pautipaug in Baltic I believe and yes I have 2-3 times and every year it improves it's quality. Normally in private club shape and is a good track. If you are visiting the casino and have tome to play by all means I would reccomend.

Only open to casino guests? I thought it was open to all public.

Played Smith Richardson in Fairfield yesterday and the course is in tremendous shape. As far as public courses go this is one of my favorites in the area.
