Perfect. If history is any guide, this means that we get Shonn Miller and Sterling Gibbs (fingers crossed) and make a run to our fifth NC next year, during which the NCAA once again makes us the poster child for everything that's wrong with men's college basketball in order to rally support for an illogical rule change.

... and then will retroactively punish UConn for playing ineligible players.

So the NCAA wants to make sure education comes first. No problem. The interviewer gets this guys opinion. LOL. Can't wait till they start penalizing programs in which students don't complete four years of education! ;)
From the article:
So does Kentucky's John Calipari.

"You need two years in grad school anyway, so it makes sense," Calipari said.

Eliminating waivers and making grad students sit out a year would "cut this thing by two-thirds," he added.

How this guy has the testiculos to speak on this is amazing. How reporters don't question him about the hypocrisy is equally amazing.

If the grad is playing their 4th year (or less) then what's the issue? You would think that them getting their degree should be paramount, advertised and rewarded, not penalized. Its not like these kids played all four years and are looking for an extra year.

Sitting out one year is a huge penalty and essentially a 'death sentence' to their career. Does the NCAA think the system is being exploited, would be kind of hypocritical, don't you think?

Two of the biggest critiques we hear about college athletics these days are 1) the players have virtually no power; and 2) there isn't enough value placed on actually educating these kids.

And now here you have the NCAA looking to take away a priviledge currently granted to kids who completed their undergraduate studies.

Why is it always being referred to as a Transfer rule. Once you've graduated you don't transfer to a graduate school. You simply enroll in a new school. Hopefully there are people making the other side of the argument before the rules committee.

This is especially idiotic, considering that graduate transfers are only eligible because they've already had to sit out a year. Now they're going to be forced to sit out another and be, effectively, super-super-seniors?

Recapping: NCAA seeks to punish kids who finish school prior to their athletic scholarship expiring because they have the audacity to seek a post grad degree.

If they change the rules which has graduate kids immediately eligible, why don't they change the rules which prohibit this powerhouse basketball programs from recruiting more than 3 McD's All Americans every year, which pretty much gives them a guarantee that they'd be a threat to win the Nat'l Championship every year? You're allowed to bring in THE BEST talent every single year but if a school gets a grad player with 1 year of eligibility it's not fair? Come on....

Calipari is very ignorant if he thinks there aren't plenty of one year grad programs.
Are we supposed to believe that the Squid knows anything about a college education? He couldn't even answer a question about the second semester of freshmen year.

If a kid graduates and have eligibility left they should be able to go to any school and play immediately. And if their current schools want to keep them they should do a better job of making it a place the kid wants to be.

Remember Phil Martelli at st joes a few years ago refusing to release someone who wanted to graduate and transfer and play right away? the kid averaged less than 10min and like 1 ppg, he wasn't being used but his coach wanted to screw him over and make sure no one else could use him.

Yes, we need a rule to prevent 22 year old college graduates from getting a leg up on a graduate degree. But it is fine for Duke and Kentucky to exploit 17 year old high school students.
If they need to change the rule make sure the kid is no longer eligible upon his 25th birthday so that there will not be an eight year age gap between college players.

If anything, the grad transfer hurts low-majors who aren't able to retain their players for the full four years in the event of a redshirt.

Not sure why K or Cal would have a problem with it, it isn't like they're trying to squeeze a fifth year out of anybody they recruit, they're usually lucky if they get two.

Plus, just because you're a grad transfer doesn't mean you don't still have aspirations of playing professional basketball. "You have to do two years of grad school anyway" makes no sense as a rational when a lot of them will want to use that fifth year as a springboard towards a career.

The only thing I can come up with, regarding Cal's b****ing about this, is that Poythress is getting his degree and wants to play elsewhere next season.
