I kind of laugh at level playing field comments from the service academies. I was in Army finance in the service, so unless it has changed, the academies are the only schools that pay their athletes. They are able to do it because all cadets or midshipmen are paid at the E5 under two years level including athletes. I was part of the group at Ft Ben Harrison in Indianapolis that processed the pay vouchers for West Point in the late 60's. If this is not the case any longer feel free to correct me.
Any problems they have in getting recruits arise from their own height/weight guidelines and active duty commitment after graduation.
Exactly at the Naval Academy they are considered active duty with a non-com pay grade. The joke is you get this money but all your time belongs to the academy with little or no time to spend what you make.
Gross monthly pay is defined by Federal Law.
US CODE - TITLE 37 > CHAPTER 3 > § 203
(c) A cadet at the United States Military Academy, the United States Air Force Academy, or the Coast Guard Academy, or a midshipman at the United States Naval Academy, is entitled to monthly cadet pay, or midshipman pay, at the monthly rate equal to 35 percent of the basic pay of a commissioned officer in the pay grade O1 with less than two years of service.
