The Legislature should pressure the presidents of the Big 12 schools to "step up" and let the University of Houston into the conference, the chairman of UH's Board of Regents, Tilman Fertitta, said Thursday.

"Put pressure on the presidents;, say, 'If you don't do this, we're not going to fund you for this,'" Fertitta said in a meeting with the Houston Chronicle's editorial board Thursday. "It's just the way it is. That's the way to do it."

Fertitta said it's "an embarrassment" that the namesake university of the fourth largest city in the United States has not been welcomed into the conference.

"Be a big boy, step up and put this school that has almost 50,000 students and is so high profile, has so many of the top schools in the United States, it's a tier one university -- we belong in the Big 12," he said. "We're a big, major school with an unbelievable history in athletics and academia."

50,000 students and none of them can read a basketball schedule. So weird.

Yes, because all of this realignment is driven by basketball attendance.

If you read the New XL Center thread, we are a new area in downtown Hartford away from the Big Ten.

As least they are trying. Unfortunately CT had no one to extort!

Extortion? That's just semantics. If it happened that way for us, we'd be happy.
So should we add central or southern to the AAC? Hell No! That would be the same argument. We are a different standard we would add revenue and a footprint without diluting the product. Houston is the complete opposite for them.

Connecticut legislators hate big time sports. They would prefer the Yankee Conference. Unless of course a photo op or lawsuit press conference is involved.

There's been a lot of smoke about Big 12 expansion since the CFP. I would add this to the heap.

Houston's got a gripe, but will be back to square 1 when the Big 12/10 dissolves.

Who is UConn supposed to extort, exactly? We have no other school in this state in a larger athletic conference at all, let alone a public school in a P5.

Extortion typically works best when some party stands to lose financially or otherwise from not following a directive of a second party that can actually, partially or fully, control that outcome...

Since no B1G school, nor ACC school for that matter, receive funding from the State of Connecticut, it might be difficult to extort those schools...

ACC=ESPN which mooches off the State. Cut them off @ their knees!

And then ESPN picks up and leaves "Godforsaken" Bristol with its thousands of Connecticut employees. Texas Tech can't just leave Texas. Doesn't quite work the same.

The funny thing is that would probably be the fourth best football league.

Giving up hundred of millions in capital investment? Unlikely.

They already have fully staffed offices in LA, NYC and even some people in DC. They'd be just fine.

Plus, don't discount Big Brother Disney. They print money. They'd have no problem building them a nice little complex in Orlando.
