Long-time lurker, first time poster here. We weren't really planning to post but recently had a "Geno-encounter" during our visit to South Bend a few weeks back that we felt compelled to share. Our schedule doesn't allow us to attend as many games as we would like to, but we try our best to make the big games. It also gave us a chance to meet up with some friends (ND fans) from Chicago who met up with us on Friday night before the game. We all stayed at the same hotel the team was staying at in downtown South Bend. It was quite the scene in the atrium as there was a holiday party being held with a live band, and a smattering of Husky fans, including a good size contingent from Kiah's family who was in-town to watch both her and her brother play against ND on the same day...how cool!

Well anywho, we were in the lounge, catching up with each other over some drinks, when we noticed Geno at an adjacent table in the dining area sitting across from a couple. We have been fortunate to meet Geno on several occasions during out travels to games and Final Fours, so it wasn't a paparazzi moment for us. But our friends on the other hand were quite intrigued, which surprised us a little. We were under the impression that most ND (opposing) fans vehemently disliked Geno. And while our friends admitted that they were bothered by his "smug" and "arrogant" aura at times, they actually admitted to how much they respect his ability to coach, recruit and "motivate" his players, as well as his great sense of humor. In short, this was a chance opportunity that they weren't willing to let pass. So before we knew it, the husband had drafted a short note to Geno, and had summoned the waitress to deliver it to him along with a shot of Irish Whiskey (after reconsidering sending an Irish Car Bomb shot)! His note read as follows:

Hey Coach,

Welcome back to South Bend! Hope you enjoy it as much (little) as you did the last time! Thank you for all your contributions to WCB!

X & Y

For reference, UConn's last visit to ND was that heart-breaking multi-OT loss to Skylar and company.

We continued on in our conversation with each other, not really expecting anything to come of it, when after about 30 minutes, the waitress handed back the note to the husband with a return blurb from the Great One, in words only Geno could pen:

X & Y,

I got a feeling this trip is gonna be like the trip to Nashville. LOL Thank you for the drink.

Enjoy!

Geno

We all knew before Geno was a Great Coach, Recruiter, Motivator and Humorist; but now we can add great Prognosticator to his list of attributes!

Go Huskies! U-Conn, U-Conn, U-Conn!

And your friends opinion of Geno matches the one I have heard most often over the years, both among RU fans and other team's fans. There are folks who plain don't like anything about him, but they are in the minority by far.

I will be honest and say "liking" his sense of humor sometimes goes down when your team is the object of the barb, but as I have said before, NJ folks always "got" Geno, even if they didn't always care for his specific remark.

Great story! Thanks for posting and please don't return to lurking - we're a fun bunch, really (most of the time...) :)

I'm wondering if this is an All-time record for Likes from a first time poster? Sounds pretty impressive to me.

And if you doubt him, just take a long look at their message board. You'll find much admiration.
