First coach's show of season with Bob Joyce. First half of show was about team, second half hockey coach Mike Cavanaugh was guest. Highlights from Geno:

Anxious to see what kind of team we have; more anxious than normal because opening on road, don't have everybody back;

First time in 15 years open on road;

Hope its not a sign but after first final four in 1991 and graduated Kerry Bascom and Laura Lishness and brought in Rebecca Lobo and Pam Webber, team opened up on west coast vs Cal and got drubbed, "they kicked our butts"

Tough to open on road when replacing senior leadership, but may be good for this team to open on road where not as comfortable; may be good for players;

Morgan has not not played in many games in which she's been 100% healthy; has been on again/off again for long time; she feels great, leg fell great, mind is great, now she needs more game action, play through getting tired; she'll be crucial to success to team because she plays so many positions; when playing with 4 freshmen not sure she loves it because it's a lot of work; playing with Kaleena, Moriah and Stewie makes life easier; but Morgan is vocal player, knows what they're trying to do on floor, and that's why she was out there, she can be big help to younger guys;

Ekmark wants to contribute, wants to be on court to help team win; will get opportunities to shoot and the more consistent she is the more confident she'll become; so far in practice team's 3-pt shooting% not as good as last year (may be because more players are shooting 3s)

KML has grown as a player and person; she is more mature on and off the court; she's willing to get on freshmen about what they need to do; thrilled for her, she's made herself an AA player; anxious to see how senior year plays out for her;

Butler wants to be a good player; works at getting better every day, in weight room 6 days a week; she's made a commitment and first step was deciding to come to UConn. She took a risk coming to UCONN after starting at G'town, leading BE in rebounds, BE freshman of the year, and came to UConn w/ no guarantee of playing time, will be playing against tougher competition; she has a lot of confidence, incredibly nice kid and incredibly hard worker and thrilled to have her. Can't wait to have her play next year;

Not many kids who look like Butler are playing basketball, they're playing volleyball. Nobody punches you playing volleyball; big kids today don't want to play with their back to the basket, don't like physical play, most want to hang out on the perimeter and shoot; don't get me wrong Stef Dolson's ability to make perimeter shots was a big key to her success, but not as many players want to play in lane with back to basket, post players need to do both to be great.

On practice, things take longer now because young kids don't know how to practice; have to show them how to practice. Some players pick it up more quickly than others and they're the players who will play more.

Thanks Cat, great report.
I was too jet-lagged to listen.
Interesting that Geno shows concerns; a Tony he's not.

Tony shows concerns.

He's concerned whether UConn will go undefeated over three more seasons or only two.

JS: good one - chuckles over this way.

PAP: yup, this we know.....I continue to be very optimistic about this young lady's contributions. Great to see how she handles herself in civies at the EX games.....gonna be a great teammate and great player. (Wonder how we missed news of this show? Was working outside most all day yesterday and into the night with lights, so probably I missed something, but I don't remember seeing any heads up about the WTIC broadcast.)

You forgot, JS, that is undefeated with a winning margin of 15 points per game.

One frosh who will not be rattled by a hostile crowd at Stanford: Kia Nurse. The kid is tough and cool. She's the new Walt Frazier.

We'll know she's the new Walt Frazier when she earns the nickname "Bonnie" the same way Walt became "Clyde" -- thievery.

For younger fans.

Walt Frazier was one of the greatest players to ever lace up a pair of Converse sneakers. Especially noted for his extraordinary defensive skills as a guard for the New York Knicks. His surge in popularity (he WAS the New York Knicks) paralleled that of the box office hit movie, "Bonnie and Clyde," about a pair of bank robbers of the '20's. (Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway)

Somebody (probably in NY media) seized on Walt's steals and tagged him as "Clyde," after the notorious bank robber. The nickname stuck and even today, Frazier is customarily addressed as "Clyde." For his thievery. On the bb court.
