Football family squabble holding up Big East-Catholic 7 divorce

>>What should have been a perfunctory announcement that the Catholic 7–Seton Hall, Georgetown, Marquette, Villanova, Providence, St. John’s and DePaul–was leaving the conference on June 30th form its own basketball dominated conference has spilled over into a family football fight among the old Big East schools–Connecticut, Cincinnati, and South Florida–and the new group, who will be joining the league on a full-time basis on July 1.
The issue: the nearly $100 million of actual and projected money that the Big East has and will collect in terms of exit fees and NCAA basketball shares. When the distribution percentages are settled, the payments will be made over 5-to 7 year period, according to a report in USA Today

The argument: The new schools, headed by Memphis, SMU and Central Florida, objected to a distribution plan which would have given the old schools as much as 90 percent of that total. The new schools wanted a much more even distribution, arguing that the Big East conference which existed when they made the decision to join had change dramatically in the past several months. So much in fact, that they should be compensated on a more equitable basis.

The old schools said that that none of the schools–with the exception of Temple which joined as a member in football last July–had done anything to contribute to the money that was in the fund and did not deserve a greater share than the $10 to 15 million which had been originally proposed.<<

So what? These schools don't have voting power yet. What will they do if we refuse to listen to them (which we shouldn't), leave? OH MAN NO TULANE. Not to mention, they'll have to pay exit fees, so we'll make more. These schools contributed NOTHING to get that money, in fact their mere presence in the league is costing us money. Split it up now, don't listen to anything these schools have to say, BEFORE they actually get voting rights.

But more seriously at this point i'm just laughing at this clusterfukc. Who cares, jesus, i mean the league could get better and there's enough potential for it become decent but the main players in the conference are acting like they're in a relationship they know isn't going to last more than a month or two just asking for BJs and threesomes.

Now Herbst can choke on her words:

But after the meeting Friday, Susan Herbst, UConn's president, expressed optimism and spoke glowingly of the new conference.
"We are very cohesive, and it's wonderful working with strong presidents from such fine research institutions," Herbst said in an email. "Everyone will need to show some patience, but it is clear that we are a great fit to this new league, one that will be ambitious in some novel ways. We will be a powerful conference and one to be proud of; lots of great competition ahead.

they'll get more money. We need them (for now) more than they need us. If we were in their shoes we'd do the same thing.

We would get an additional (what is TCU paying? 5 Mil?) from each school, that's another 40 mil, plus Temple's not going anywhere so that's 4 teams not 3. Make a scheduling alliance with Independents. This would be half ass going Indy. We better play hard ball, what are they going to do? If they don't come, they make less, and owe us 5 mil.

They won't owe a dime if they left. The original conference they joined fell apart. And they have already made a contribution to the league, we are already selling tickets to play their schedule and P was able to recruit last season because we were in a football conference (going forward) that included them.

Did anyone notice the 5-7 yr window for the payouts? So much for taking the $25-30 mill and run idea.

This really is tiresome.

This is a crock.....their argument is that the conference they were going to join was no longer what they thought it'd be. Guess what? You're right. Where are you going to go Houston? Back to the C-USA? Enjoy? MWC? Yeah they just got a bang up TV deal and don't forget that the "equality" of money sharing you want isn't there because Boise gets a bigger share. I really don't know what those schools are honestly going to do to stop this from happening? They all know that Cincy, UConn, and probably UCF are on borrowed time so enjoy it and take the TV deal and money you will be getting from a conference you did nothing to earn and shut up.

Someone said we need them more than they need us. Anyone really think that TV deal ESPN just matched will still be what it is if UConn, Cincy, and USF aren't in the conference? Ha.

Like you said, we are already selling tickets. You think they wouldn't owe money to get out? Try taking that to court. Also when was Tulane added, before or after Rutgers/Louisville announcements? I forget.

Tulane was added before the Louisville announcement. I only remember because Aresco left out mentioning UConn and praised Louisville at the announcement and we all blew our loads thinking it was a sign that we were gone from this dumpster fire.

Honestly, those schools are duck*ing high if they think they deserve more than they're getting.

Let them go to another conference if they're unhappy - they have no leverage whatsoever.

I think we should have a very simple negotiating strategy here....we find the door and we point to it.

If SMU or Houston thinks they're being mistreated, they can walk out it.

They're going to make more money in this conference than they currently do and they do not have a better option - even if the Mountain West wanted them, (they don't), they're still making more in this steaming heap.

Tough luck.

This has become comic.

Time for the theme from M*A*S*H - 'Suicide is painless'

You couldn't script this stupidity and the salaries involved. Public Sector Workers on display.
