Three Strikes this week looks at Louisville’s Kyle Funkhouser, UConn’s Carson Cross and Notre Dame.
Strike Two: Cross Sets The Standard At UConn
>>Cross holds a 7-1, 1.44 mark after nine starts overall, but of course his contributions run deeper than his numbers. Cross was a captain on last year’s team but wasn’t able to be around all the time, having to dedicate himself to rehabbing and his academics. Chosen as a team captain again this year, Penders says he’s living up to the mantle, setting the example for the rest of the group to emulate.
He knows what a winning team at UConn looks like. He’s seen it.
“He was around all those guys that are now in professional baseball and he saw how they went about things,” Penders said. “So he’s really helped carry on and carry over our ethos and vision from those teams that were very successful to kinda help build this team.
“He’s kind of been the standard bearer, the example for the rest of our club to follow and carry on. He’s been the one holdover from those years. He’s been a nice tie to those clubs.”<<
