If UConn were to join the B1G, in addition to the B1G-ACC Challenge, you would also have access to the new Gavitt Tipoff Games:

Big Ten, BIG EAST announce matchups for inaugural Gavitt Tipoff Games

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The BIG EAST and Big Ten Conferences today announced the matchups for the inaugural Gavitt Tipoff Games, with eight men’s basketball games set to air on BTN, an ESPN network or Fox Sports 1 from Nov. 17-20, 2015.

The Gavitt Tipoff Games is an annual early-season series played between the two conferences and named in honor of Dave Gavitt, founder of the BIG EAST and basketball visionary. The BIG EAST home games will be telecast on Fox Sports 1, while Big Ten home games will air on BTN or an ESPN Network.

“Our family is excited about the Big Ten and BIG EAST launching this new series, which honors the memory of Dave Gavitt and his passion for college basketball,” said Dan Gavitt, NCAA Vice President of Men’s Basketball Championships. “He would be most pleased that the student-athletes, coaches and supporters of these historic college basketball programs can look forward to annual competition at the highest level to help open the college season with a bang. We are thankful to the two great conferences for recognizing the Gavitt legacy with the intra-conference games featuring new and old rivalries and intriguing match-ups.”

The annual series will feature renewed battles between local foes and attractive intersectional matchups. Eight teams in the inaugural event advanced to the NCAA Tournament and won at least 20 games last season.

Below is the complete schedule for the 2015 Gavitt Tipoff Games. Start times and specific television assignments will be announced at a later date.

Tuesday, Nov. 17
Georgetown at Maryland: First meeting since 2008-09 season
DePaul at Penn State: First meeting since 1984-85 season
Nebraska at Villanova: First meeting since 1998-99 season

Wednesday, Nov. 18
Illinois at Providence: First meeting since 2003-04 season

Thursday, Nov. 19
Creighton at Indiana: First meeting since 1974-75 season
Iowa at Marquette: First meeting since 1982-83 season
Rutgers at St. John’s: First meeting since 2012-13 season

Friday, Nov. 20
Xavier at Michigan: First meeting since 1988-89 season

Beginning in 2015 and scheduled through 2022, the Gavitt Tipoff Games will be played on four consecutive days in the first full week of the college basketball campaign. The series will span eight years, with games played at home sites. Each BIG EAST team will participate a minimum of six times, while Big Ten programs will take part a minimum of four times. Teams from both conferences already meet in some traditional rivalry games, and those matchups will continue in the upcoming seasons.

The unique series between the two conferences is named to honor the late Gavitt, who had a profound and lasting influence on the sport of basketball on the collegiate, professional and Olympic levels. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.

Here's a philosophical question: if a basketball bounces at center center court at MSG during a St John's / Rutgers game and there is nobody there, will it make a sound?

Kidding aside, there are some pretty cool early season matchups. Georgetown/Maryland and Indiana/Creighton should be fun.

UConn fans should arrange a take over of MSG for the Rutgers/St. Johns game. Wear UConn gear and bring signs that say UConn to B1G or something to that effect.

"IF UCONN WAS PLAYING TODAY, THERE'D BE 3X AS MANY FANS TODAY!"
Wait, I assumed the games were played at MSG. Only RU vs. SJU is at MSG? Sad.

Aside from Georgetown/Maryland, there really aren't any Marquee matchups. Rutgers/St. Johns? DePaul/Penn State? It looks like they are saving Seton Hall as their ace in the hole for next year. In fairness, there are some decent OOC early season matchups in the mix, but if anything it illustrates the stark differences between this series and the ACC/B1G series. It will be interesting to see how many tune in.

Mmm not sure pumping up the gate is the best way to convince people that they need to invite you in order to pump up the gate.

You know your partnership with the B1G matters when you don't get a game with Ohio State, Michigan State, or Wisconsin!

So now we are rooting for the ACC over the Big East?

Surprised Villanova, arguably the new Big E's most consistent team over the last few years (consistent in bombing out of the Dance early, too) was not put into a marquee pair with State instead of Nebraska. Why also not pair in-state matches between Indiana and Butler and Marquette and Wisconsin, too, unless they are already scheduled outside of this event? That would at least get the locals excited. That DePaul at Penn St match will be a packed house, lol.

These days I only "root" for UConn, but clearly the ACC has some brands that generate interest. Some suggest that the B1G put these "games" together to gain exposure on the East Coast, but I'm not sure if they generate a lot of excitement. Instead, marquee matchups could have included Michigan State/Villanova, Michigan/St. Johns, Wisconsin/Providence, Indiana/Georgetown, Indiana/Providence or Ohio State/Georgetown. Maybe you limit it to just four games at the Garden.

They could also choose to build on regional interest/rivalry to drive some excitement (albeit at the expense of out of region exposure). Aside from Georgetown/Maryland you could set up Nebraska/Creighton, Xavier/Ohio State, DePaul/Illinois, Marquette/Wisconsin, Butler/Indiana and Rutgers/Seton Hall.

Maybe it's just me but some of the announced matchups seem underwhelming. People never showed up for a first round conference tourney game of Rutgers vs. St. Johns. Will they now? DePaul at Penn State? Nebraska at Nova?

Btw, I am looking forward to UConn playing Georgetown and Villanova, even without the Gavitt Games moniker.

The challenge has Fox's fingerprints allover it. Unlike the Big Ten/ACC challenge, it's entirely possible for none of the games to show up on ESPN (although I'm sure they'll pick up at least 1 game)

I think it'll be an interesting datapoint to see how how the ratings for these games will be for the ones that are punted over to Fox Sports 1...if the numbers look bad maybe that'll influence the next Big Ten media deal a bit.

According to the OP:

It does look like FOX pushed for the series, and it probably stands to benefit most. I'm just not sure who pushed for (or against) these pairings.

Hey, if we're going to the B1G, might as well acknowledge and honor Gavitt first...

F--- that.

We've suffered enough.

You invited Rutgers, you should go.

The insanity of conference realignment...there is something called the Dave Gavitt TipOff games and Creighton and Penn State get to play in them and UConn can't.

You can all die in a pit of lava.

Well, yeah. It's all BS. We're just trying to cope. To say this is an insult to Dave Gavitt doesn't begin to describe the insanity.

They should have ditched the conference v conference match up and had UConn v Nova and Syracuse v G'town paly in the Dave Gavitt Memorial at MSG. Keep it to teams that were previouly relevant in the OBE. You want to do it over a weekend. Then have a second day where Cuse plays Nova and UConn plays G'town. 4 marquees gams at MSG in honor of the guy who got the BE going and the 4 teams that won National Championships as part of the BE. It would sell out the garden for all 4 games since all 4 teams travelled pretty well to that tournament. That's the inaugral, after that they can rotate in the likes of SJU, SH, Pitt, ND, Rutgers, PC, BC, WVU, UC, UL, etc...

Die in a pit of lava!!

There's Only 2 games there that should be played as reasonable regional connection (and that is with the St. John's v Rutgers & then the historic Maryland v Georgetown); the rest could happen in an aircraft carrier after the Rolling Stones played ... and be played before a few thousand.

Shame on Aresco for not landing something like this. The AAC is Gavitt's conference after all, and PC squirmed out with the rest of the Catholics.

TV networks make these things happen and they do it to promote their properties. Fox has the Big East and B1G, they made this happen. ESPN has the AAC but only temporarily and they aren't arranging any AAC-ACC challenges.

ummm, you do realize, it would be only one game. It would be entertaining to see UConn Blue at the game and after each made basket from either side, shouts of UConn ringing out. So I suspect when it happens, UConn will be allowed to echo as the scoring will be low.

Yep and we'd hear how the gate was "x" at that game. Pretty sure attendance is annotated with people college degree or rooting affiliation.
