This was a draw between UMD and the ACC. The ACC got a lot ($31mm) but didnt get the full amount. UMD got out for less than $52mm.

To those who think that this somehow sets a precedent for the future that $31mm is the exit price for the ACC, your an idiot.

There are some specific reasons why UMD was able to get out for less and the next potential exiter might not.
1. The increase was implemented really quickly. It was a majority vote and didnt give UMD a chance to exit in a timely manner (60-90 days). That has been rectified under the GOR/exit fee which has been in effect for almost 1 year now. No one can now say that they didnt have time to exit.
2. Louisville really was as better/as good as UMD. In this case, a good replacement made it easier for UMD to argue that the ACC really didnt suffer lost revenue when they left. I doubt the same replacement will be available the next time around.
3. The annual revenue for the ACC will continue to go up so the "penalty" for exit will increase as well.
4. I expect the ACC network to start in the future. This will only increase revenue and therefore, the potential for lost revenue in the future.
5. The ACC learned from this case and will make sure that the "weaknesses" in their case this time are fixed in the future.

And this is why the ACC's style of thinking will perpetually make it the most likely conference to lose members.

A small city in Kentucky does not equal an entire state in a wealthy region when it comes to TV. The BTN creates a huge advantage for the B1G. While the ACC prefers small outposts like Syracuse, Chestnut Hill, Pittsburgh, Louisville, the B1G is grabbing up huge swaths of land in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Good luck with your "small" strategy.

100% of the people in a small market can watch a game on TV, and it wouldn't equal 3% of the NYC audience watching the same game. Never confuse ratings with reach. More people in NYC watched the UConn women's basketball team play in the championship game than the entire Louisville market watched UK play in the men's championship game, and the Louisville market rating was the USA's highst rating. The UConn women beat that with a 4.5 rating in NYC.

People like winning teams and Louisville has had plenty of that lately. They also like to watch winning teams play other winning teams which is why people from all over the country will tune in to watch Louisville play. Same reason that Miami gets great TV ratings nationwide (when they are good). Well see how well the B1G strategy works when cable goes a la carte and the excitement dies down at UMD and Rutgers.

Last a checked, Chestnut is Boston, a major TV market. By that same logic, Storrs isnt really a big market either is it?

If the acc is focused on winning why did it take Syracuse following its worst decade ever and Pitt and all of its mediocrity?

Chestnut Hill is the extent of interest in BC athletics. UConn has all of Conn. and part of NYC.

As for your dismissal of BTN, you can wait until the cows come home, but that sucker is going to allow the B1G to use its money advantage to lure away schools.

L'ville football was in the toilet before Strong. And UConn has the best collegiate basketball program in the country.

If you want to talk about a la carte...then the ACC may was well dump any plans it has for the ACC Network.
And just so you can have your memory refreshed...UCONN is part of the #30 DMA and #1 DMA (because Fairfield County is considered part of NYC DMA). According to the same list Louisville is #49, so enough with the bulls**t already!

Not as much fun as watching you learn that lighting doesn't strike twice in the same place. Reports are that the team isn't to happy with the old coach. I expect small things from the Cards this year.

Funny how you guys seem to forget that between Petrino and Strong there was Kragthorpe...3 years of losing, and running off Petrino's players who couldn't stay out of trouble or find a classroom (APR issues). Read the SI College CFootball preview...your wonderful AD is sticking his neck out for a guy that will leave you high and dry again for the next SEC job that comes along. Before you come here and run your mouth you should have your info straight By the way does your LCC education allow you to even understand the Neilsen Ratings DMA list that I posted a link to, or is that so above your head you don't even know how to open it!.....larryredbull=A S S C L O W N

Not a Louisville fan, just an observer.

Yes Kragthorpe sucked but overall they have been very successfull in the last 10 years with Petrino and Strong. Athletic Revenue backs this up as well.

Petrino wasn't before Strong. Louisville over the last 5 or 6 years lost several football games to UConn.

If you think UoL > UMD then your an idiot.

I live in Louisville, you drive 5 miles outside of this city in any direction and guess what, nobody cares about UoL.

As an ACC guy I've had a good look at UMD for the last 20 years. Their fan support (and fans) is extremely fickle in an area with plenty of other good options. Maybe this changes in the B1G but I'll place my bets on Louisville from what I have seen so far. Way better fan support and it shows in their revenues.

Louisville is so dominant that they are .500 against UConn in their time in the BE/AAC together (and in history since that's the first time they played) , losing at home to an abysmal UConn team during UL's most successful season ever. Cards hired Kragthorpe, UConn hired Pasqualoni. Both temas suffered, Lousiville had better timing.
