What are the prerequisites for UConn becoming a member of the Association of American Universities(AAU)? Is UConn actively pursuing admittance into the AAU?

The AAU isn't a merit organization, its a lobbying group. To get in, you need to be invited. Like anything else it helps if you bring something to the group.

I think the ability to pull heavy research grants. Of course, a large endowment helps too.

I think the academics on this board mentioned that the AAU is looking to contract more than expand right now. UConn can get in if they increase their research dollars - A LOT. Hopefully the new Medical Director and his wife can bring in significant Oncology research funds, along with the biomed facilities.

I've seen internal memos from the AAU saying that they are indeed looking to contract.

AAU offices are on K Street in Washington DC. They lobby congress to provide more research dollars through the national foundations and the military. Over time, AAU schools have grabbed 50% of all federal research dollars. With research money way way down after 2008, the org suddenly got the idea that it should contract. Kind of the same damn thing going on with the BCS schools. So, yes, they are looking to kick out more schools, and UConn is still behind research-wise of the bottom schools.
