2nd & 2 from their own 25 with 13:00 remaining in the 4th Quarter

#1 - UCONN just completed an 8 yard slant pass to Noel Thomas. Shirreffs rushes to the line while BYU is making a bunch of substitutions, … but Shirreffs lets the BYU D sort itself out so he can make his pre-snap read.

Conclusion – Bloom’s block appears to give an indication that this was a designed pass play for DiLorenzo. But what was the intended route? The O-Line never released so it couldn’t have been a RB screen. Thomas never ran a pattern, but could have solely been a decoy. DiLorenzo looked unsure of his responsibility. Judging by the way the rest of the offense executed that play the only possibility I can come up with was a pass to DiLorenzo in the left flat.

The very next play was the Kaufusi pick. It looked as if the hurry up after the Thomas completion led to some indecisiveness in the play call and the execution. The best play may have been for Shirreffs to snap the ball and get the free play while BYU was substituting … at least UCONN would have gained 5 yards.

I really love these @Kgun7. When you see this particular play unravel like it did in each of your screen shots, it makes the INT on the next play even more frustrating.

Great job, I hope the OC is asking the same questions/pointing out - wtf?

My wild guess...they were counting on a short yardage defense and throwing to one on one coverage for the WR opposite Thomas (Beals?)

When BYU stuck with its base defense and didn't bite hard enough on the play action, the WR was doubled, Bloom was covered, DiL was covered, Thomas was out of the play...yada..yada.

When they don't respect the run, it's difficult to dictate to the defense. Against Donald Brown and friends would have had 9 in the box making this play possible, although they would have run it anyway and probably picked up the first down. It starts up front, in all things.

The 4th slide makes it look like the slot WR was running a curl, but when he "curled" BS was looking toward the flat (presumably where he was expecting delorenzo to be).

Cant seem to pinpoint where the wideout on the bottom of the screen was/was going

Hard to tell, but it looks like BS is looking at Bloom. If Alec chips, runs 2-3 yards and turns, BS can throw to him. However, he could be blocking for the curl. If he was given more time, Max would have been open. Any idea how many seconds he had from snap to run?

Fantastic post. These are awesome.

We obviously confused them by getting to the los quickly. Maybe we should keep that in our back pocket

These are the type of plays BS needs to spot as his second option before running with the ball. Our tight ends have the size to catch the quick pass over the middle to keep drives alive.
