In San Francisco, on Thanksgiving, 1976, a truly momentous rock concert took place, "The Last Waltz" -- the farewell event of The Band.
About 5,000 people paid $25 (!) to enjoy a turkey dinner, participate in ballroom dancing, then experience an epic concert. This lucky audience did not know in advance who the guest artists would be, so we can only imagine how stunned they were to see such a galaxy of stars perform. Among them: Hawkins, Dr. Dos, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Paul Butterfield, Muddy Waters, Ringo Starr and Bob Dylan.
The concert ended at 2:15 a.m. and was later immortalized on CD by Rob Fraboni and DVD by Martin Scorsese.
It was one hell of a concert and last night, after a fabulous TG Eve prime rib roast, some of my family joined me to watch what happened on Thanksgiving 39 years ago.
