Five Columns on Connecticut topics CT Sportswriters should address

•Has the Power 5 Cartel effectively blocked out ALL of New England (14.7m population) and New York (19.4m population).

This is NOT just for Football. This becomes the quicksand that gradually will kill programs in Football (non Power 5); and then College Basketball (see various comments); and Women’s Sports (see the Number 1 dominant College Program in any sport)); and 1000s of other College Athletes. And then, this PRECLUDES opportunity for about 10% of the American population by not providing nearby Public Universities to nurture these talents andprovide academic opportunity through the character building of Athletics.

Hypothesis: The Power 5 has no Public University in New York or New England. This effectively has eliminated great opportunity.

Boston College is NOT relevant. They really only serve about one Zip Code in New England. Syracuse comes from a rabid Central New York population; however has no reach (particularly in football) into either Albany to the east or Buffalo to the west. And neither are major players in the Boston or New York City.

•Boston College’s stated goal was to knock out UConn as a competitor in the New England region.
Was this an effective strategy?

Hypothesis: Boston College has gotten a good chunk of money. But without a rivalry with the dominant Public, in ALMOST all sports, they have effectively hurt their own Athletic Program and damaged their fanbase. They still never draw for anything. They are relatively meaningless beyond the concentric circle around their campus. This has EFFECTIVELY damaged all sports in New England.

Would like Mike DiMauro to tackle this column

•GenoAuriemma has structured a Program that has just effectively lapped all competition.

Hypothesis: My eyes. (While he has lost recently & occasionally the team plays poorly away from the friendly confines) his system is just so far better than any other Coach, hehas set in motion a continuing dominating Program going forward. No team looks consistently competitive – barring a 6-8 star.

See discussion of Power 5

•Either Jodi Rell or Dannel Malloy could have useda carrot or a stick to get UConn into the Power 5given the massive governmental requests from ESPN over last 6 years.

Hypothesis: Gene DiFilippo stated that ESPN controlled the process. Connecticut had leverage and other states used leverage to advance themselves. (even one with the worst growth prospects in the US – West Virginia) Why notCT?

•The UConn Fanbase – now generationally beyond the Dream Team & Geno rise – is suffering from a common disease: Too much success.

Hypothesis: The University & the State needs to re-address the Venues & the Brand. There is too much invested throughout the Program to be so inept in the presentation of this product. It’s not simply the lack of winning in Football, it is the persistent dropping of opportunities throughout.

RT @sportswatch New York ranked dead last among Nielsen's 56 measured markets for Rose Bowl at 9.0% of homes. At least we were 54th for Sugar at 9.1.
